New Year’s Decorations: DIY Paper Lantern Craft With Free SVG

Create these budget-friendly New Years Decorations. I’ve designed these cute “Hello 2020” paper lanterns along with confetti to complete the look. Keep your older kids busy assembling this fun craft, while you accomplish other tasks for the party.

SEND THE CARD-STOCK TO CUT THE NEW YEARS LANTERN

Add your card-stock to a Silhouette cutting mat. I ended up using a broken-in (less tacky) strong grip mat. You want to use a mat with a good tack, so when you peel it off the stars remain stuck to the mat.

Open Silhouette Studio on your computer and open the downloaded files. Then send your file to cut.

Depending on your machine and the sharpness of your cutting blade, you may need to cut the file twice. Before unloading the mat from your machine, lift the bottom of the card-stock and see if it cut through. If it didn’t, just repeat the cut job.

How to create paper lanterns for New Years decorations.

SCRAPE OFF THE STARS FOR CONFETTI

After you peel off the extra letters and numbers, use your Silhouette scraper to remove the stars. This worked best when I tilted the scraper low, less than a 45 degree angle. Only apply light to medium pressure to the scraper.

REMOVE LEFTOVER LETTERS AND NUMBERS

The script and the zero’s need to be gently removed with your hook tool.

You want to protect the welds in the “ello” part of the word. It’s not difficult to remove the script, you just need to be gentle.

CUT AND ASSEMBLE THE VELLUM

Open the vellum cut file. Load your vellum on the cutting mat and send the file to cut.

Fold the vellum along the score lines. Then add adhesive to the tab and close the rectangle. Set it aside for later.

ASSEMBLE THE NEW YEARS LANTERN

Fold the lantern along the score lines. Then add adhesive to the tabs on the bottom and side.

Using the tabs, connect the bottom of the lantern to the sides.

Then close the side tab.

Using a bone folder, press the tabs firmly down on the inside of the lantern.

ADD SPRAY ADHESIVE

Take your assembled lanterns outside, to a well ventilated area. Using spray adhesive, cover the inside of the lantern with an even coat of spray adhesive. Wait a minute and check the tack. If it’s not sticky enough, repeat with another coat of adhesive.

Gently squeeze your vellum rectangle to make it smaller than the lantern and lower it inside the lantern until it touches the bottom. The vellum should not show above the top of the card-stock.

Lay the lantern on its side and press the vellum to the inside of the card-stock on all four sides.

Add some LED tea lights to the inside of the lanterns. Place them on your table or island and add the stars for confetti. Another option would be to use them as party favors, filling them with New Year’s (Hershey) kisses. These New Years decorations are a budget-friendly craft for the whole family to enjoy.
